About

Alessa Joosten is a Düsseldorf-based artist and designer who creates wearable objects between the fields of Design, Fashion and Art. Most of them seem to be wearable but aren’t very functional at all.

She studied Applied Art and Design at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences under Herman Hermsen and Jantje Fleischhut. In her artistic practice, she explores the limits of jewellery and clothing and objects, while questioning the function of them. By creating crossovers through combination of materials, she challenges the beholders perspective on objects surrounding us.

Material-transformation is part of her process. She examines the functionality of materials and alienate them from their conventional use.

Alessa Joosten has participated in various artist residencies where she works with what the environment offers — materials from the surrounding nature and remnants of human presence in natural spaces.

She was awarded the Manu Factum state award in 2017 and has shown her work in numerous exhibitions, including Munich Jewellery Week, Sieraad Art Fair (Amsterdam), Galerie Reverso (Lisboa), Galerie v&v (Vienna) and National Gallery Victoria (Melbourne).

In addition, she shares the experience she gains from her own practice to her students as a teacher.
